About DownTo1 Running

Last updated: 24 August 2026

DownTo1 Running is a shoe finder for people who already know how they run and are tired of being told what is popular. It asks a short series of questions about your running — not about your budget bracket — and re-ranks the entire catalogue against your answers, live, with the reasons attached to every position.

What it actually does

Most shoe advice arrives as a list somebody else ordered: a "best of" chosen once, for an average runner who does not exist. This site inverts that. There are twelve questions — where your kilometres happen, what you are running for, weekly volume, what your stride needs under it, foot shape, how much shoe you want underfoot, soft versus firm, heel drop, race-day plans, weather, whether this is your only pair, and a price ceiling. You answer the ones that matter to you and skip the rest.

Nothing is a form to submit. Every answer re-scores all 78 shoes immediately, the ranking rearranges under your hands, and each shoe carries the specific reasons it moved — which of your answers earned it points, and which ones it fails. You can also mark an answer as a deal-breaker rather than a preference, and watch the field shrink accordingly.

How the scoring works

The engine is a weighted additive model over normalised attributes — the standard, unglamorous method for multi-criteria decisions, chosen because it can be explained rather than because it is clever. In plain terms:

If a set of answers leaves nothing viable, the site tells you which constraint is doing the damage instead of returning an empty page.

Independence

No brand pays for placement here, and there is no arrangement under which one could. The ranking engine is a pure function of the catalogue and your answers; it does not import the commerce layer and cannot read it, so which retailers exist — or whether a shoe is purchasable at all — is invisible to the scoring. That is a structural property of the code, not a promise about our good intentions.

Two brands are deliberately absent from the questions: brand loyalty and looks. Both decide a great many real purchases, and neither can be ranked honestly, so the site leaves them to you.

How the site is funded

Some outbound links to retailers are affiliate links, which may earn us a small commission if you buy — at no extra cost to you. That is the only revenue here: there is no advertising, no sponsored placement and no paid inclusion. Because the ranking is computed before any link is built, a commission cannot influence what you are shown; the links are attached to the result, never the other way round. Every list of retailer links carries this disclosure on the page itself.

Where the numbers come from

Specifications — weight, stack height, heel drop, plate, support type — are the manufacturer's published figures, at the reference size the manufacturer quotes. Prices are indicative launch prices in euros and move constantly with discounts, regions and model-year changeovers, so treat them as a way to compare shoes against each other rather than as a quote. The /100 ratings for cushioning, stability, energy return, durability, grip and breathability are our own editorial judgements, assigned so that shoes can be compared on a consistent scale. Always confirm the current price and spec with the retailer before you buy.

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any manufacturer, and all trademarks belong to their owners.

What the catalogue covers

78 current running shoes from 15 brands, road and trail: daily trainers, max-cushion cruisers, stability shoes, super-trainers, carbon race shoes, technical trail shoes and low-drop options, from budget picks to flagship racers.

An honest limit: running shoes are on an annual model cycle, and a catalogue that claimed to be exhaustive would be lying by the following spring. This one is curated and refreshed rather than complete — the aim is that every category a runner might need is represented by shoes worth owning, not that every SKU on the market appears. If a shoe you think belongs here is missing, tell us; that is how the list improves.

Languages

The site is available in nine languages — English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese — and that includes the shoe write-ups and the reasoning, not just the buttons. Switch language from the header on any page; the choice is remembered in your browser.

Privacy, and getting in touch

There are no accounts and no sign-up. Your answers stay in your browser and are never sent to us. Visit statistics come from self-hosted, cookieless analytics, which is why you were not met with a consent banner. The privacy policy sets out who the data controller is, what the analytics collect, and the third-party font load this page also uses.

Corrections, missing shoes and business enquiries are all welcome — see the contact page.
