Shoe life

How long will they last, and what is that per kilometre?

There is no mileage at which a shoe expires — when to replace running shoes spends a section explaining why the 500–800 km rule is a range being quoted as a number. So this gives you a band, and the figure that actually compares two pairs: what each one costs per hundred kilometres.

The pair

Your weekly distance

A rotation splits that distance between pairs, so each lasts proportionally longer — the rotation builder is the other half of this sum.

Roughly

367 km – 550 km

A band, not a date: ±20% around 458 km. At 40 km a week that is 9 weeks to 14 weeks.

Check the shoe, not the spreadsheet. The midsole is the part that fails first and the part you cannot see — when the pair stops feeling like itself, it is finished, whatever this number says.

Where the range comes from

  1. The rule everyone quotes is 500–800 km. Between those two figures sits a whole season of training for most people, which is the guide's point: it is not telling you when your shoes are finished.
  2. The catalogue's durability scores run 38 to 92. The median is 78, and that shoe is placed in the middle of the common rule. Every other pair scales from there, so a fragile racer lands well below it and a trail shoe above.
  3. The band is ±20%. The answer depends on which shoe, which runner, which surfaces and which paces. This page knows the first of the four, so the band stays visibly wide.
  4. Cost per 100 km is the honest comparison. Price alone flatters a shoe that does not last. Divide one by the other and a cheap, tough trainer usually beats a racer by a factor of several.

The durability figures are this project's editorial scores out of 100 — a comparative judgement compiled for the app rather than a laboratory result. Prices are indicative EU launch prices.
